Kids are back in school. Pumpkin-flavored coffees pour forth from the coffee shops. Halloween candy and costumes line the shelves at the stores.
It seems fall has arrived full force despite the calendar still showing summer on the schedule.
As September 21 — the official final day of summer despite what the retailers profess — creeps closer, I'm mulling over the summer sorts of stuff I meant to do and didn't. A few stand out that I still want to do, still hope to do, before I can no longer...
Summer is the season of simple pleasures. A time for sweet, spontaneous — often spectacularly serendipitous — silliness such as those moments we remember from childhood. Our own childhood, possibly the childhoods of our children.
Simple pleasures we've set aside — perhaps even forgotten — in our ongoing pursuit of grand adventures, grand outings, grand activities to share with our grand kids. Simple stuff we've likely not done in far too long.
When did you last...
• jump rope?
• skip down the sidewalk?
• play freeze tag?
• sip root beer floats from a frosty mug?
• run through the sprinkler?

One quick look around—and up—told us exactly what was up... and that it wasn't bees. It was wasps! A huge melon-sized hive of them just above the door to our garage.
The size of the hive floored me! I immediately...

― Emily Dickinson
My hollyhocks are in bloom, and I'm so thankful it will be several weeks before they begin undressing.
Perhaps I'll get lucky and it will...
