That time my grandsons became pirates

When my two oldest grandsons, their mom, and I all visited Walt Disney World in January for our grand-as-can-be Disney Grand Adventure, one of the delights for Mac and Bubby was when they became pirates. Real pirates, with real pirate names.

See, Walt Disney World has a special add-on experience called The Pirates League, in which boys and girls with a buccanneer spirit can be transformed into a pirate with their own pirate look and their own pirate name. All with the goal of becoming a new recruit to team up with Captain Jack and his pirate-y mates.

The first step is being given a proper pirate name — through a very unique process of spinning pirate dice and turning ship wheels and more. The results of the spins and such lead the Pirate guide to pick each recruit's name from the master book. (Here's where I admit to being a bad grandma who has forgotten — and didn't write down — the spectacular swashbuckling monikers given Bubby and Mac.)

From there, the transformation begins:

Once the Pirate League Oath has been sworn and the other pirates-in-transformation cheer for their new mate, recruits are whisked away to a secret room (with their parents) to learn swashbuckling secrets and earn special treasure to take home.

And to have their pirate portrait taken by a photographer far better than Grandma. (The following photos courtesy Memory Maker.)

The Pirates League interactive experience is located in the Adventureland area of the Magic Kingdom park at Walt Disney World. Packages start at $39.95; full details can be found here.

Disclosure: Bubby and Mac were transformed for free as part of our #DisneyGrandAdventure adventure.
