Grilled Grandma: Grandma Amy

How many children do you have?
Two. One daughter and one son.

How many grandchildren? What are their ages?
One grandchild, 7 months old

Any great grandchildren? No

What do your grandchildren call you?
She's too little to call me anything yet, but I'm hoping she will call me "Mamy" The "M" for "mother" in front of my name "Amy"

After the initial elation, what was your first concern upon hearing you would soon be a grandmother?
Honestly, another loved one to worry about. I'm a worrier, and I worry about everyone I love.

How often do you get to see your grandchildren?
They live six hours away, so about 7 times a year

What is the best thing about being a grandma?
Seeing how much my  daughter loves her and enjoys being a mother

What is the most challenging part of being a grandma?
Not worrying!

Describe a recent time that one (or more) of your grandchildren made you laugh out loud.
My granddaughter was visiting us over the holidays and it was the first time she saw a cat. It was also the first time my cat saw a baby. The two of them looking at each other with such quizzical expressions on their faces cracked me up. Neither one knew what to think of the other.

What is your favorite thing to do with grandchildren who visit your house?
Snuggling and smothering her with kisses!

What is your favorite thing to do when visiting grandchildren at their house?
The same as my house. I know how fast they grow up so when I'm with her I soak up every minute with her.

What/where has been your favorite family vacation?
One Christmas in lieu of buying gifts, we took a road trip to Pensacola Beach, Florida. We rented a hotel right on the beach and woke up to the ocean waves every morning. We saw the fireworks on the beach at New Years. It was one of my favorite memories.

How do you maintain the bond between yourself and your grandchildren between visits?
I text my daughter every day to get updates and she constantly shares videos and pictures with me.

What do you most want to pass along to your grandchildren?
To love God with all their heart and soul.

What is one word you hope your grandkids think of when they think of you?
Love

What is one thing you wish you had learned earlier as a grandparent?
I'm still new to grand parenting so this is a hard one for me. I'm sure I'll make mistakes and I would love advice from the more experienced grandmothers.

What is one thing (or more) you're proud to say you do right as a Grandma?
I give her lots of attention and love. I know how much it  hurts when children are not loved or cared about from their grandmother, so I will never do that to my own grandchildren. They will always, always, always know how much I love and care for them.

What one bit of advice would you give a new grandma?
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your grand babies! They need to know you love them. Shower them with attention! And don't play favorites with your grandchildren. Let them all know they are equally and unconditionally loved.

Is there anything else you would you like to add about being a grandmother?
Sometimes the word "Grandmother" conjures up the traditional image of an older, plump woman with a smile in her eyes wearing a housedress and apron. I think that version is warm and soothing, but I also think grandmothers come in all shapes, sizes, and personalities. I love the new show "Young Sheldon" because I love the  grandmother character in that show. She is so sassy, funny, outrageous, yet, a fabulous, loving grandmother. I don't know if I will ever be the traditional grandmother, and I don't want to be. That's why I want her to call me "Mamy" So she knows I'm not the traditional grandmother, but someone who is her grandmother, plus "Me". Does that make sense?

Do you have a website or blog? What is the url and what is it about?
Yes, my blog is Amy's Creative Pursuits, http://www.amyscreativepursuits.com. I am a lifestyle blogger who blogs about arts and crafts, home decorating, gardening, family, traveling, recipe reviews, and fashion. I do a "Grandma and Me" fashion post the first Monday of every month where my granddaughter and I show coordinating fashion outfits.

Do you have other works you'd like to share (published pieces, charitable causes to promote, home biz, etc)?
I don't, but I would love it if anyone would like to follow me on Instagram  https://www.instagram.com/ameliasfleurs/ or Facebook  https://www.facebook.com/ameliasfleurs/
