Disney's Planes: Activities and more to enjoy before the show opens this Friday

Disney's Planes

Last night I had the pleasure of seeing Disney's Planes before it hits theaters on Friday. The 3D adventure, from the makers of Cars, was a delight — for the kids as well as the adults in the crowd.

The official synopsis from Disney goes like this:

Disney’s Planes is an action-packed 3D animated comedy adventure featuring Dusty (voice of Dane Cook), a plane with dreams of competing as a high-flying air racer. But Dusty’s not exactly built for racing — and he happens to be afraid of heights. So he turns to a seasoned naval aviator who helps Dusty qualify to take on the defending champ of the race circuit. Dusty’s courage is put to the ultimate test as he aims to reach heights he never dreamed possible, giving a spellbound world the inspiration to soar.

Disney's Planes

My take on the flick is that it's far more fun — and far more funny — than I thought it might be. Some of what tickled my fancy was related to the witty word play throughout, much of which surely flew right over the heads of the little ones but made the adults in the theater laugh out loud again and again. My favorite part, though, had to be El Chupacabra (voice of Carlos Alazraqui) serenading Rochelle (voice of Julia Louis-Dreyfus) with a "low and slow" version of "Love Machine."

The Fifth Estate from DreamWorks Pictures

The movies slated for this fall continue to impress and intrigue me. Here's the latest info from DreamWorks Pictures on The Fifth Estate, a dramatic thriller that opens October 18 and stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Daniel Brühl, Anthony Mackie, and David Thewlis, with Stanley Tucci and Laura Linney:

Triggering our age of high-stakes secrecy, explosive news leaks and the trafficking of classified information, WikiLeaks forever changed the game. Now, in a dramatic thriller based on real events, The Fifth Estate reveals the quest to expose the deceptions and corruptions of power that turned an Internet upstart into the 21st century’s most fiercely debated organization.

The story begins as WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and his colleague Daniel Domscheit-Berg (Daniel Brühl) team up to become underground watchdogs of the privileged and powerful.

On a shoestring, they create a platform that allows whistleblowers to anonymously leak covert data, shining a light on the dark recesses of government secrets and corporate crimes. Soon, they are breaking more hard news than the world’s most legendary media organizations combined.

But when Assange and Berg gain access to the biggest trove of confidential intelligence documents in U.S. history, they battle each other and a defining question of our time: what are the costs of keeping secrets in a free society—and what are the costs of exposing them?

Here's the official trailer for The Fifth Estate:

The Fifth Estate
is presented by DreamWorks Pictures and Reliance Entertainment in association with Participant Media and is produced by Steve Golin and Michael Sugar, with Bill Condon directing.
The screenplay is by Josh Singer, based on the book Inside WikiLeaks by Daniel Domscheit-Berg and the Guardian book WikiLeaks by David Leigh and Luke Harding.

The Fifth Estate (rating TBD) will be released in U.S. theaters on October 18, 2013.
