July 4 food & fun faves! Plus, GRAND Social No. 309 link party for grandparents

July 4 food & fun faves!

Based on some flack I recently received on social media for sharing Fourth of July activities for kiddos, it seems some folks believe the current state of our nation renders us lacking reason to celebrate the good ol' USA.

I beg to differ. I say celebrate what is good and grand about it we must. Especially for the kids' sake. Our country does have honor, does have heart, and we definitely have much to appreciate and uphold and respect. Even if it sometimes requires digging deep to see it.

This holiday week I propose we do dig deep and put patriotism above partisanship! With that in mind, I once again share my…

On Gene Kelly and GRAND Social No. 77

It's Monday, which means it's GRAND Social time! Thank you for coming by for the link party.

Before I kick off GRAND Social No. 77, though, I need to ask for your input on something extra special. I have some great opportunities coming up in the next two weeks — including a Bloggy Boot Camp conference this weekend and the Starz Denver Film Festival which begins this Wednesday and runs through Nov. 17. It's the latter that I need your input on.

As part of the Starz Denver Film Festival, I will be interviewing Patricia Kelly, the widow of Gene Kelly. Yes, that Gene Kelly. Crazy, huh!? She emailed me to introduce herself in advance of the festival, and we've planned an email interview (unfortunately our schedules conflict, preventing an in-person chat) for an exclusive Q&A to be published here for you, the Grandma's Briefs readers.

And that's where you come in: I want to know what questions you would like asked of Patricia Kelly. She will be at the festival to present GENE KELLY: THE LEGACY, so please watch the following trailer for the performance. Then leave a comment below on what you would like me to ask Mrs. Kelly about the presentation, her life with Gene Kelly or about Mr. Kelly himself. You can also email me your questions today, if you prefer. Either way, I'll fit in as many questions from Grandma's Briefs readers as I can when I conduct my once-in-a-lifetime interview with Patricia Kelly.

I look forward to your questions!

And now... GRAND Social No. 77.

link party

How it works:

  • All grandparent bloggers are invited to add a link. You don't have to blog about grandparenting, just be a grandparent who blogs.
  • To link up a post, copy the direct URL to the specific post — new or old — that you want to share, not the link to your blog's home page. Then click the blue button below marked "Add your link" and follow the directions.
  • You can add up to three posts, but no duplicates, contests, giveaways, or Etsy sites, please.
  • Adding a mention such as This post linked to the GRAND Social to your linked posts is appreciated. Or, you can post the GRAND Social button anywhere on your page using the following code:

Grandma’sBriefs.com

<a rel="nofollow" href="/" target="blank"><img src="http://grandmasbriefs.squarespace.com/storage/GRANDsocialbutton.jpg " alt="Grandma’sBriefs.com" width="125" height="125" /></a>

  • The GRAND Social linky accepts posts through Wednesday evening, so please come back to see those added after your first visit.

  • If you're not a blogger, you have the pleasure of being a reader. Those sharing a link would be honored to have you visit, read and, if so moved, comment, even if just a "Hey, stopping by from the GRAND Social." Bloggers who link are encouraged to visit the links of other bloggers and do the same.

Butter candles plus the GRAND Social

We grandmas are a crafty lot, and many of us are dedicated fans of Pinterest. This weekend, though, I stumbled upon a craft far more clever than most I've seen on Pinterest of late, one from a very non-grandma-like fellow who likely doesn't even possess a Pinterest profile.

Take a look:

Come on, now, you know you want to try it. I admit that I do ... and will ... eventually.

Now, though, it's time for this week's GRAND Social! Thank you for once again joining me. Dive in and enjoy! And please do remember that if you link up and receive visits and comments to your post, linky protocol is to return the same in kind to others. Cheers!

Sweet and spicy recipes, plus the GRAND Social

Though it may already be the seventh of January, today seems to me like the beginning of the first real week of the new year as it's the first full week of 2013 with no holidays in it. Anyone else agree? Or am I the only one taking an egregiously long time getting back in the swing of things?

Before we get too far removed from the holidays, though, I do want to share with you something from my New Year's Day celebration—two recipes I made for our New Year's Day eat-a-thon (for lack of a better word). Click on the photos and you'll be taken to the full recipes in my Recipe Box tab.

Sweet and Spicy Cheese-Stuffed Jalapenos

Rich Caramel Brownies

Both are pretty darn good, if I say so myself. I hope you and your family enjoy them!

Also, as noted in today's post title, we have another GRAND Social up and running. Thank you for joining me!

How it works:

  • All grandparent bloggers are invited to add a link. You don't have to blog specifically about grandparenting, but you must be a grandparent who blogs.
  • Posts shared can be an old one or a recent one, your choice.
  • To link up, copy the direct link to the specific post you want to share, not the link to your blog's home page. Then click the blue "Click here to enter" text below and follow the directions to add your post to the list.

Thank you for participating in the first GRAND Social grandparent linky of 2013!

Blessing the Boats, plus the GRAND Social

Like much of the country, I'm still at a loss for meaningful words regarding the unimaginable, horrific events of Friday. We all deal with crisis in different ways but I personally hope to come up with words that focus on love, compassion, comfort, and hope versus the, yes, immensely important, yet so very polarizing matters that ignited heated conversations—some sadly vitriolic, others downright idiotic finger-pointing diatribes—immediately upon news of the tragedy.

I've not yet come up with such words.

I did, though, come across the following poem and found a small degree of comfort in the words of the poet, so I wanted to share them here.

Blessing the Boats by Lucille Clifton

may the tide
that is entering even now
the lip of our understanding
carry you out
beyond the face of fear
may you kiss
the wind then turn from it
certain that it will
love your back may you
open your eyes to water
water waving forever
and may you in your innocence
sail through this to that

With holiday prep in its final days plus all else that's going on, I sincerely appreciate you joining me for the GRAND Social. One note before today's link party: As next Monday is Christmas Eve, there will not be a GRAND Social next week but will return December 31.

How it works:

  • All grandparent bloggers are invited to add a link. You don't have to blog specifically about grandparenting, but you must be a grandparent who blogs.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...and the GRAND Social

Over the weekend, three important things took place:

• I finished decorating the house (with help from Andrea!)

• It snowed

• We had our annual Cookie Swap.

Those three things mean one thing: It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

As that song has been stuck in my head for most of the weekend, I figured I'd pass it along to you.

It's Monday, so that means it's also beginning to look a lot like time for the GRAND Social. Please join me!

How it works:

  • All grandparent bloggers are invited to add a link. You don't have to blog specifically about grandparenting, but you must be a grandparent who blogs.

The end is near, plus the GRAND Social

Do you believe any of the hype about December 21, 2012 being the end date for the world as we know it?

Meh, I don't either. Such silliness.

There is an end date that's not so silly that I want to let you know about, though, and that's the end date for the nine giveaways associated with the Grandma's Briefs Holiday Guide. That date is today. As of 11:59 MST tonight, the giveaways will close. For good. The end.

Which means that if you've not yet entered, you're missing out on all this:

That's a VegiBee Sonic Garden Pollinator (seriously, you gardeners will love this thing!), a Hallmark Cards gift pack, a yoga book for grownups, a cookbook for college kids, two holiday books for younger kids, and three cool CDs for kids of all ages. Good stuff! Head to the Back Room and scroll through each of the giveaways to enter one or two...or all nine. I'll draw winners tomorrow—I hope you will be one of them!

One thing you won't miss out on is this week's GRAND Social, for here it is:

How it works:

  • All grandparent bloggers are invited to add a link. You don't have to blog specifically about grandparenting, but you must be a grandparent who blogs.

Collaboration is key plus the GRAND Social grandparent linky — October 29

The GRAND Social has always been a collaboration of sorts. People add links and people read links to create an enjoyable experience for all. Without those posting, there'd be no GRAND Social. Without those reading, there'd be no GRAND Social, at least not as it's meant to be—a collaboration.

Here is another sort of collaboration, one in which commuters in the United Kingdom add notes here and there to create something beautiful, something worth sharing. A collaboration.

Thank you for collaborating with me today on the GRAND Social. I appreciate those who link, as well as those who read. Together we, too, are creating something beautiful, something worth sharing.

How it works:

  • All grandparent bloggers are invited to add a link. You don't have to blog specifically about grandparenting, but you must be a grandparent who blogs.

Music to my ears plus the GRAND Social grandparent link party

Happy Monday! Thank you for visiting on this fine fall day.

For more years than I can remember, George Winston has been my soundtrack for the season. Please enjoy a sampling from Autumn, my prelude to this week's GRAND Social.
