No-cookies cookie swap! Plus, GRAND Social No. 284 link party for grandparents

No-cookies cookie swap!

The holidays were happening at my house yesterday as a chunk of extended family gathered for a no-cookies cookie swap.

Family: The majority of mine, the majority of my sister Becky's, plus our mom.

Family: The majority of mine, the majority of my sister Becky's, plus our mom.

No cookies in a cookie swap? Well, our annual family cookie swap — a family tradition with my mom and my siblings for nearly 30 years — has become quite large as more and more kids of the siblings became adults and joined the swapping. Which meant the number of cookies each baker must make for swapping (a dozen per swapper) resulted in an occasion more overwhelming than awesome. More chore than charm. At least for the cookie bakers and makers.

So this year we chose not to make cookies. Not to swap cookies. But to still gather together for a few festive hours to celebrate the season. And time with one other.

Seems the cookies were never the highlight of our cookie swap anyway. The highlight was time with family. We learned that last year when we had no cookie swap — the first swapless year in decades — as my dad passed away just before the swap would take place.

A swapless year felt wrong. Void of family. So this year we altered the occasion: Deleted the cookies, delighted in family. (And missed the handful or so of traditional attendees who were unable to make it.)

Hence a new tradition is born: The annual No-Cookies Cookie Swap!

(Though a plate or two of said treats shall forever be welcome at our potluck-style seasonal soiree.)

GRAND Social No. 284

Time to share some links! Thank you for participating in this week's GRAND Social link party exclusively for grandparents — the last one of 2017 as the next two Mondays are holidays!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to one and all!

How it works:

  • All grandparent bloggers are invited to add a link. You don't have to blog about grandparenting, just be a grandparent who blogs.

  • Grandparents who do not blog (or want to share something other than their own post) are welcome to add links to other posts grandparent readers may be interested in.
  • To link up a post, copy the direct URL to the specific post — new or old — that you want to share, not the link to the blog or website home page. Then click the blue button below marked "Add your link" and follow the directions.
  • I reserve the right to remove posts I feel are inappropriate. (Which hasn't happened yet, but I feel obligated to note that, just in case.)
  • Those who add links to the GRAND Social link party will be sent a weekly reminder when the party goes live. If you prefer to be removed from that email list, feel free to do so (and you'll still be more than welcome to join the party any time).
  • If adding your own post, including a mention such as This post linked to the GRAND Social to your linked posts is appreciated.
  • The GRAND Social linky accepts posts through Wednesday evening, so please come back to see those added after your first visit.
  • If you're not a linker, you have the pleasure of being a reader. Those sharing a link would be honored to have you visit, read and, if so moved, leave a comment, even if just "Hey, stopping by from the GRAND Social." Bloggers who link are encouraged to visit and comment on the links of other bloggers, as well.
