    Farewell, summer whites

For reasons not perfectly clear, wearing white after Labor Day has long been rendered a faux pas of magnificent proportion.

With that in mind, I bid farewell to summer's flora and fauna that will soon cast their garments of white to the wind.

    Today's question:

Do you flout or follow the fashion advice to not wear white after Labor Day?

My motto: throw caution to the wind and make up your own darn rules...fashion or otherwise.. ; )

But I admit to only 'winter' white at this point. There's just no way I can wear a pair of pure white shoes or GASP! tote around a white purse at this point in the season. Maybe if I lived in a southern state?

I guess I don't wear much white, except for shirts, and I wear those anytime of year. I don't think I have had a pair of white shoes since I was a kid.

I love white and I throw caution to the wind and wear it whenever -- but I do think being in southern California those fashion regulations aren't enforced as much. BUT on the other hand, Jenna won't let me wear white jeans anymore -- not any time of year!

I'm wearing white jeans as I type this; they go with the blue and white long-sleeved plaid shirt I'm wearing. It's chilly up here in the mountains this morning.

    Beautiful flowers!
I wear whatever the heck I want to wear. I'm almost 59 so my "fashion plate" has long-since crumpled. It's freeing, actually.

    hehe

I have a pair of white pants that are comfy and actually fit, I will wear them until the rains, ice and snow comes which this year will last a helluva long time...my black pants are kinda faded and got a tad bit too fit, so off to get some blue, grey and black ones that actually fit me, I am 64 and I don't care about what anyone says about fashion..they don't live in my knickers and I don't live in their knickers..One has to just live comfy and not worry about fashion, most people don't live in the world of Heidi Klum, she is fit, trim and gorgeous, good for her and has the sweet kiddos too...but that is her and I am not anywhere Heidi Klums shape and fashion sense...I have always worn comfy clothes always, why be a slave to fashion when living on a farm, it won't work and is not too great when helping around mud, rain and crap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love your column a lot get a kick out of your musings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Lovely flowers and collage, Lisa!

I hardly ever wear white any time of the year as I don't find it flattering to my big butt and my complexion...lol!

I'm with Jeanie; I wear very little white and then only tops. Not sure I've ever owned a white purse, belt, shoes or pants (not even in the 80s).

Mary Jane: So great to see a new face (name) here! Welcome! I think you've got the right attitude on the wearing of white...and your enjoyment of my musings. :-D

Pat: Your comment made me chuckle. My big butt is a reason for avoiding white pants as well.

AHHHH.....Being from Austin, Texas area and having temps over 100 degrees MOST days from end of May through Mid to late September, I welcome fall.....As far as wearing white....heck, I was born to break rules from what my momma use to tell me. Here in our area that rule of thumb is not followed. We wear white, sundresses, shorts and flip flops year around....Boy, am I thankful since that is what my wardrobe mainly consist of.

My only white shoes are athletic/walking shoes, and I do wear them after Labor Day until I have to wear boots.

Well...I certainly enjoyed the comments. I haven't worn white in many years for lots of the reasons listed above. I'm a denim girl - jeans in the winter, denim capris in the summer. At this point in my life, I keep the wardrobe simple and comfortable.

    Beautiful pictures, Lisa!
I see so many people still wearing white that I don't even think it's a rule anymore! I stopped wearing white a long time ago when I spilled, dripped, or splashed something on it every time I wore it!

Beautiful flowers! I don't wear much white, except for blouses.

I flout it Lisa. And I think flowers should too. White are my favorites!

At a Labor Day cookout last night, 3 of 4 women there wore white pants - a farewell to summer. Guess we are still following that no whites after LD policy here in NY.

In Texas it is too stinkin hot to NOT wear white!!! I wore my white skirt to work today. It is still over 100 down here. I am from Ohio and this rule must be followed up north. TOTALLY NOT in the South!!

    September 4, 2012 | Unregistered Commenteradrienne

That's one of the few fashion rules that I can remember, so I follow it!

SO funny but it seems to be a generational thing. I am sure the not wearing white will die out...I cannot bring myself to do it. Ingrained to early in life!
