    Small talk with my grandson

Bubby, at nearly four years old, has reached the age where we can easily converse about this and that. I understand all he says; he understands most of what I say. When he doesn't understand, he's quick to request clarification with a blunt, "What do you MEAN, Gramma?"

I've never been good at small talk, but when it's with Bubby, I'm easily engaged and entertained as long for as he's willing to keep up the chatter. I love to hear his thoughts, his interesting view on the world around him and the people near and dear to him. It usually ends up being not such small talk after all.

Here's a sampling of the delightful mind nuggets my grandson shared during our time together last week:

Out of nowhere and completely unrelated to anything that came before, Bubby asked, "Have you ever holded a fish? Wouldn't that be so cute? Maybe if they're sad, you could do that. I've always wanted to do that but Mommy never lets me."

"Gramma, do you wanna play the hip-hop scotch game?" (Meaning hopscotch, I assure you, not a rowsing drinking game of sorts.)

One evening as we settled onto the couch for storytime before bed, I had Baby Mac on my lap, Bubby at my side. Bubby, who was to hold the book and be the designated page turner, kept staring at his brother instead of getting on with his job. "Why do you keep looking at him?" I asked. Bubby's response: "<Baby Mac's> head is getting so cute, don't you think?"

"I love your muddy buddies, Gramma! maybe one time you can save a little bit of these for a dessert because mommy never ever has these kind of candy."

Bubby and I had been talking about horses and I told him about the day PawDad, Aunt B (Brianna), and I rode horses at my sister's ranch. "Gramma, horses don't like RANCH!" he said. "Ranch is for carrots. It's white. It's not for horses!"

Bubby: "You look so pretty in that dress, Gramma."
Gramma: "Why thank you, Bubby. That's so sweet."
Bubby (seeming a little sad and confused that the conversation ended there): "Every time I tell my mommy she looks pretty, she gives me a hug."
Needless to say, Bubby got his hug.

    Today's fill-in-the-blank:

A memorable comment I recently heard from a child was _____________________.

So cute! Wish we could record every funny word they speak. Twenty years later we would still be laughing.

My grand son tripped and fell. He wanted to cry, but then he said, "It's all a part of life...not a fun part."

It is fun to hear some of the things that are going on in their heads.
One of my grandsons told me that I must not be very old because I knew how to buckle his carseat. (I'm sure one of his other grandparents had commented about being to old to know how to get the thing buckled when they were trying to get him into it).
I love that Bubby has figured out to get a hug by giving a compliment.

It's been many years since I've had any little kids around to quote but, about 35 years ago, when my youngest was a little girl, she and I were listening to Christmas carols and she innocently asked, "Mom, how did they know that angel's name was 'Harold'?"

How a fourteen year old can floor his mama:
"Aidan, if you look so nice in that shirt - if you keep dressing like that for school, Anna is definately going to notice you!"
    "Mom, she's already noticing me."
This from the boy I always pictured as the shy, quiet, geeky type.

Too, too cute, everyone. Like Grown and Flown mentioned above, what a treasure it would be to record all of their funny comments—and wisdom, as in the case of Olga's grandson!

Aw, the comment Bubby made about Baby Mac's head just gave me a huge smile. Thanks for sharing.

On the way to the preschool Spring Fling last night my Granddaughter was telling me something about baby brother pooping on her sippy cup...which had to be thrown away? Beats me, I'm still trying to figure it out.

Oh gosh, those photos are precious, but my favorite is the Thing 1 picture. Too dang cute! I haven't, sadly, talked with any little ones as of late, but hope to talk to my grandson very soon. He's not little, but we have great conversations still.
    Have a great weekend Lisa!

LOVE the pictures and Bubby's comments! He is so darned cute!

My favorite Amara comment (and one that Grampy now repeats often) is "It's OK Grandma, you try!" Yes, I do!

Grandma Kc: That is sooo sweet. You DO try...and usually succeed. You're an admirable grandma and Amara knows it.

My 7-year-old granddaughter said that she wanted to be a fashion designer when she grows up. Her mom told her that she should consider being a doctor, because they make more money. My granddaughter: "No way! I would have to look in people's weirdy places."

Lisa, that is just so cute. Children say the most delightful things & they are so innocent.

One of my favourite things that my son said to his father has we wandered through the museum "Look Dad, those birds are wearing gum boots!." He was talking about a Moa. Have to share another one that he said as he watched a game of polo on TV, "Those people are playing golf on horse back!"
