10 things this grandma wants to know
1. How to get natural-looking, 100% gray coverage from home coloring products that promise exactly that. I've gone from brown with gray roots that have become trunks with far-reaching vines highlights to Bronco orange to not-so-orange in the past week trying to figure it out.
2. Why my grandsons seem to be sick so much more often than my daughters ever were. Why all kids nowadays seem to be sick so much more often than kids used to be.
3. What the point is of non-binding caucuses. If it makes no difference in the grand scheme of things, why waste so much time, money, effort?
4. How to succeed at growing anything in the mountain desert gardening zone in which I live. I'd like to know before I once again waste so much time, money, effort (and water!).
5. Why sometimes using the auto setting on my DSLR camera results in awesome photos and other times they look like <cuss>.
6. If a despicable, child-killing, poor excuse for a human being gets a free pass through the pearly gates simply because he asked for forgiveness in advance of his heinous act. Or in an email to his pastor. Or at the very last minute. Seriously.
7. Okay, so there are four time zones: Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific. If it's 9 p.m. in Eastern time zone, it's 8 p.m. in Central, 7 p.m. in Mountain, 6 p.m. in Pacific. So why do television programs advertised as being on at "9 p.m. Eastern/8 Central" play at 8 p.m. in the Mountain time zone?
8. I want to know what love is. I want you to show me. Okay, not really. I know that one, but how could I resist? (Resist what? you ask? Ummm...referring to this...from Foreigner, not Mariah.)
9. Why the marijuana legalization issue is an issue at all when (legal!) alcohol has ruined far more lives and killed far more people than marijuana ever will.
10. Why this silly little family won't move closer to Gramma:

Well, I do know the answer to that one. And I respect it. But it can't hurt to ask again.
Today's question:
What do you want to know?

Great questions! #2 and #6 have been weighing heavily in my mind this week.
I want to know why reps & wholesalers automatically drag out medical alert buttons, canes, and similar devices when I tell them I want to purchase gifts for Grandparents.
I want to know exactly what a Grandmother is 'supposed' to look like and precisely how she's 'supposed' to act.
I want to know why I'm treated as feeble-minded and physically disabled if I claim the word Grandmother online or over the phone. Did this magical transformation take place the very second my Granddaughter was born?
I want someone to tell me why I'm no longer considered a Mom to the Mommy groups/blogs and relegated?? marginalized?? to the role of Grandmother...what is this about?
I want to know why I'm so darn crabby and ranting today. Think I'll go have some chocolate for breakfast...
Numer 2 and Number 6 are great questions and I wish I knew the answers! I have way too many questions to ask here. Hope you have a great weekend!
Nonnie Kelly: I hear you loud and clear on that. Find myself again and again ignored in some bloggy forums as (some, not all) mommy bloggers see the "grandma" and think that means I'm feeble in body AND mind. Especially odd as I'm actually the same age as some mommy bloggers—I just started mommyhood early and they started late. (And I'm not even talking about my good friend Pammeey!)
Unfortunate for both sides when we're dismissed so easily. And those darn reps obviously don't see the goldmine they're passing up when they marginalize you.
One more reason we in the grandmahood need to stick together, make our network strong, our voices heard.
In answer to #1 I've used L'Oreal Feria with much success for several years now. #45 French Roast
Megryansmom: And I love your color! Close to my natural. Will need to try that. Thank you! One questioned answered, nine to go! :o)
I want to know why most (not all, I don't have a DSLR camera) of these questions, plus maybe 17 thousand others, have to chase one another around in my head an hour or more after I've gone to bed and am trying to put an end to one day in order to sleep and prepare for another day. I'm just glad I'm not God; I would have used every one of my lightening bolts up, striking a lot of unworthy- to-breath people dead.
I want to know numbers 1 and 9 too! Sheesh....
And? Why do I have to go to work? Oh wait, I know the answer already. Dang it.
I want to know if the Grandma will move closer to the cute little family when she and the grandpa retire? Many grandparents do.
That first pic is seriously adorable.
If you figure out the camera thing, let me know. Maybe we should take a class together!
I want to know why greasy hamburgers and french fries can't be good for us.
I've got the same #10 about a silly family that just moved from NJ to GA. I'm in CALIFORNIA!!
I haven't experienced the marginalization of grandmahood yet, but I'm pretty new at this. I've found some great mommy bloggers on twitter who have welcomed me right in.
You are so funny!
There are alot of things I'd like to know but after substituting all week at elementary schools where I live....I would like to know why there are so many disrespectful and naughty kids? Not all kids are bad but just the same kids, day after day.
Love your list of questions. I have a lot of the same questions. While I realize that a lot of these are meant to be rhetorical questions, I can help with a couple.
#1 - I've always colored my own hair. The main thing it takes is commitment. You have to do it every 4-6 weeks, depending on how fast your hair grows. I've tried a lot of different brands and I think L'Oreal Preference is the best. Start with all over color. If your gray is hard to color (mine is) leave the color on an extra 5-10 minutes. Then use the root touch-up method that's explained in their instructions for touching up when you need it.
#4 - Find a LOCAL NURSERY and have them help you choose some native plants. It took us a long time to learn that a lot of things just won't grow in our coastal plains area which tends to be dry and is extremely hot. We must have replanted 5 or 6 years in a row before we did this and got great results.
#6 - No way that bastard gets a free pass. Repent means to turn away from. Confession and forgiveness requires change. You can't confess and then go ahead and do the crime. That doesn't get you forgiveness. If there is a God and an afterlife (which I sometimes have serious doubts about) that can't be how it works. If it is, count me out.
One of my favorite writers, Robert Fulghum, who wrote "All I Really Need to Know I Learned In Kindergarten," says that any time he's in a meeting and the presenter asks if there are any questions, he raises his hand and asks "What is the meaning of life?" He says he feels like he should always ask just in case they know.
I'm so lucky I have Diane to color my hair, I don't know what I'd do without her!
Growing healthy lush plants is sometimes the result of simply treating the soil ahead of time. Have you researched plants that are native to the area or zone? Sometimes you can be surprised at what plants will work well in your garden. If you get a chance to speak to a master gardener in the area I would do it!
I rarely have luck using the auto setting on my SLR, my son on the other hand takes gorgeous pictures on auto with the same camera, I don't get it either.
Don't get me started on Josh Powell... Grrrr! There is no way he is getting a free pass!
I completely agree with you on #9. I can't believe there is even a debate about it!
Lovely photos Lisa.
I want to know why grandparents who are raising their grandchildren 24/7 are not afforded the same benefits as foster parents.
I want to know why grandparents who are raising their grandchildren are the forgotten class of society.
I want to know why my friends that knew before I started raising my grandchild want nothing more to do with me.
I want to know why people do drugs & ruin their lives & those that love them.
I want to know why my daughter bought 8 children into the world & abandon them all for a life of drugs, alochol & going with any man that will have her.
