    Cookies = Christmas

One major mile-marker on my road to Christmas has been passed: I hosted my family's annual Cookie Swap on Sunday.

The lineup of goodies swapped was impressive:

And the time with family was festive (with a large chunk of it dedicated to football, as expected):

My mom and sisters and I have been swapping holiday cookies for about a quarter of a century now, and Sunday's gathering had four generations of the family in attendance.

Cookie Swap prep time and baking can be quite a chore, but it's one well worth it as I hope the tradition will continue for many more years to come, for many more generations to enjoy.

    Today's question:

If you had to eliminate all sweets and treats from your holiday diet except for one, which one seasonal goodie would you keep on enjoying?

GASP! Lisa, this is one of the most difficult questions you've asked!! Giving up sweets and treats during the holiday season is unthinkable.

Sorry, I just can't do it. I'm keeping EVERYTHING with chocolate and then of course I need salty treats to 'finish' the sweet taste of the chocolate.

Hmm. It's much easier for me to say what I'd give up. I'm not fond of candy canes...

Still sooo jealous of your cookie swap, but glad you had a great time.

I'm with Nonnie Kelly. The idea of giving up anything with sugar in it -- that's just wrong! I want them all BUT if I could only keep one thing it would have to be fudge. Or maybe it's peanut brittle... of course I can't give up pumpkin bread..... I don't like this question. It's only 6:30 AM and now I want a donut!

If I had to give up everything else, I'd still keep Susan's chocolate chip cookies; they're the best! But, I'd much rather give up SNOW! Unless it would stay off streets and roads. Living inside a snow globe is a lot harder than just looking at one.

If I could keep only one treat it would have to be decorated sugar cookies. Not as much for the taste as the nostalgia. I've baked them every year for as long as I can remember, and it just wouldn't be the same without that little tradition.

It looks as though a great time was had by all. Can you believe I've never even been to a cookie exchange? Maybe I need to start a new tradition.

If I could keep only one Christmas goodie, it would have to be pecan pie.

In my head, decorated Spritz cookies equal Christmas, but I'm also pretty fond of peppermint bark, a friend's almond tea bread, and a Slovenian specialty called potica (po-teet-sa). It was all the rage in northern Minnesota where I grew up, and we can get it here in St. Paul.

    WOW what a spread!

I would not be able to give up anything "pumpkin" and decorated sugar cookies.

I would give up everything except iced sugar cookies. But I wouldn't like it. I like to taste of several different sweets.

A family cookie exchange is such a wonderful tradition. Unfortunately, only one sister and I would participate in our family. The others would come for cookies, but they wouldn't bring any.

wow, you are right, that is quite a spread for your swap -- wish i was a member of the family this time of the year! ;) now, what a difficult question to pose on us... i can pretend and i say i don't care for sweets but you'd know i was lying! i can give up most... but our family all time favorite sweets? ice cream. i couldn't give up plain vanilla ice cream! :) does my answer have to be christmas cookie swapping related? if yes, then i can't give up chocolate chip cookies... or snicker doodles... whoops, that's 2... i give up, this is a hard game to play !
