    Searching for gold

Here in Colorado, the aspens put on a spectacular fall display -- if you catch them at the right time.

Last weekend Jim and I guessed the timing was right to catch the yellows, golds and coveted reds in the mountains not too far from home. So we packed up Mickey, Lyla and some sandwiches and headed for the hills.

Turns out we guessed wrong -- at least in terms of the aspens at the relatively low altitude we visited (9,000 feet). We've heard the aspens in the high country have turned, but what we saw on our outing were just bits of yellow here and there, with plenty of green still taking center stage. The best colors likely will be this coming weekend.

We still had a pleasant day, though, and managed to get some good photos ... even some of Mickey climbing up into my lap, which the 60-pound pit mix never does. Seems our big, bad dog doesn't get out of the city often enough, and the gravel and brambles were too much for his sensitive tootsies.

Here are the highlights of the day:

    Today's question:

Where is your favorite place to view the changing colors of fall?

Great photos! I love the collages!

Colorado is so gorgeous. You're lucky to live there.

We drive to the mountains to see the changing colors of fall. Skyline Drive is part of Shenandoah National Park and it has some incredible sweeping views.

You did get some great photos! I love the ones of Big Bad Mickey being a scared baby puppy.

Jeff and I went on a ride to Deckers on Sunday and it was SAD! Not only had all the aspens turned and dropped their leaves but that was the first time I'd seen that section of woodland destroyed by the "Hayman Fire". Made me want to cry. And that all happened in 2002!

Those are some GREAT pictures! I absolutely love the one of Mickey sitting in your lap. Too funny! I also love that in the picture with you and the dogs, they're both looking at the camera. That NEVER happens for me.

We enjoy driving up towards Cripple Creek in the fall. The vistas are just beautiful!

    Hi Lisa;
Love love love your pictures! You may not have found the leaves fully turning, but you "captured" the aspens for sure! I really miss Colorado and especially in the fall. We used to drive up to Cripple Creek every fall, and didn't mind all the traffic, because the view from the car was amazing.

    Thanks!
    Terri

We like to drive up to Cripple Creek too. We drove up last week and we did see alot of color. This weekend should be the best though. I love your pics....especially the one of Mickey on your lap, hilarious.

Ahhhhh...fall. The last splash of color before the doldrums. Looks like a fabulous day!

My favorite memories of fall were the aspens in Alaska! So beautiful! I like driving in the mountains here to see a little color. Although we have mostly evergreens.

Love the pictures of your puppies!

We don't get much in the way of fall colors here. My son goes to school in Fort Collins and they decided to go camping this past weekend despite crummy weather--which disappeared as they climbed higher and they had some of the gorgeous weather your pics show.

I did get to see fall colors in Vancouver B.C. once and then once in New Hampshire--I can see why many people consider autumn their favorite season.
