    March 2008

As you read this, Jim and I are driving back from South Dakota where, along with most of his siblings, we chose the pieces of his mom's life we want for our own. Granny is still living, but she'll never live outside of a hospital again, will never even know her things -- and her former life -- are gone.

To have known such a thoroughly good woman is a great privilege of my life. This is so sad.

My condolences to you and your husband and his siblings. I read your previous post about Granny and she sounds like a remarkable woman. I like how you phrased this process--choosing the pieces of his mom's life. When my in-laws passed away, my son asked for two things--the black dial telephone and a little plaque that hung in their kitchen. These were the two things that evoked his grandparents the most clearly. The dial phone because it was the only one he ever remembered seeing actually in use, and the plaque because of its sentiment: "My house is clean enough to be healthy, and dirty enough to be happy."

Hope that things go well with you and Jim during this time. Drive safely and thanks for sharing the picture. She was a beautiful woman.

I like the way you expressed the process. Sorry for what your family is going through; all the best.
