    Sibling revelry

Going through my mother-in-law's old photos of her and her siblings has me considering my own siblings and the few photos I have of us.

I'm pretty sure the center photo below, now 11 years old, is the last one there will ever be of all seven of us together. Funny thing I just realized: It might be the only photo there ever was of all of us together.

"Our siblings. They resemble us just enough to make all their differences confusing, and no matter what we choose to make of this, we are cast in relation to them our whole lives long."

    ~Susan Scarf Merrell

    Today's question:

When were you and all your siblings last together?

Christmas, last year. And that was the first time in . . . ? Can't remember! Probably someone's wedding or funeral.

Has it really been eleven years since that center picture was given to me for Christmas??? You are all so beautiful and handsome, just like you were as children.

It's been five years since I was down south to be with my sisters and little Mother; how fortunate we are, to have our Mother at almost 99 years old.

    Lisa;
I love the family sibling picture! Everyone looks so good!

The last time I saw my sister was over 5 years ago, but will be seeing her at Thanksgiving this year in Georgia. YEAH!

Last time the six of us were all together was for my son's wedding which was two years ago in November. It's sad that we only get together for weddings and funerals.

There are six of us......the last time we were all together was this past May for my niece's wedding, except one brother who is incarcerated. So I guess the last time all six of us were together was probably twenty years ago. Thanks for the great quote and the cute pictures!

Note: Just wanted to mention that I think your title today is Brilliant!

We were together for my dad's 95th birthday in September. Based on the behavior of one brother, we won't be together again except for funerals. Trouble is, everybody lets him get away with being a jerk and pretends it didn't happen. So the two of us who can't tolerate it just have to separate ourselves. You'd think families could learn.....

Your post reminded me of how complicated sibling realtionships can be. I have 3 siblings and our mom is doing well at 87. It makes her very happy so see us all at the same time, but we live in different cities. We do try to get together with our mom once every year or so.

EVERYONE: Thank you for the thoughtful comments. It makes me realize the my siblings and I aren't that unusual after all, that everyone's relationships with their siblings can be challenging.

Two of my three siblings live in other states, so we don't get togehter too often..usually only for family weddings. This summer my Mom turned 88 and we all were togther to celebrate her birthday.

We keep in touch by phone, facebook and e-mail....that works out pretty well. :)
